Pink Lake (Lac Rose)

Lac Rose, or Lake Retba, is one of Senegal's most surreal natural wonders, located about 30 kilometers north of Dakar. The lake is famous for its unique pink color, caused by the Dunaliella salina algae which thrives in its high-salinity waters. The intensity of the color varies with the sunlight and wind, often appearing most vivid during the dry season. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the lake is a hub of traditional industry; local salt harvesters spend hours waist-deep in the water, coating their skin in shea butter to protect against the salt's corrosive effects. They gather salt from the lake bottom and pile it into shimmering white mounds along the shore. Visitors can take a boat ride across the buoyant waters, watch the harvesting process, or explore the surrounding sand dunes by 4x4, tracing the final legs of the historic Paris-Dakar Rally.
