Tiya in pictures.
Tiya is the best known of Ethiopia's ancient stelae sites, a compact field of dozens of carved standing stones marking burials of an unknown culture. Many of the monoliths bear enigmatic symbols, including swords and abstract figures whose meaning is still debated by archaeologists. Inscribed by UNESCO in 1980, it offers an intriguing glimpse into the country's deep and largely undeciphered past.
