Natural wonder
In Ethiopia, East Africa
Danakil Depression in pictures.
Lying more than 100 metres below sea level in Ethiopia's far northeast, the Danakil Depression is among the hottest inhabited places on the planet. Its otherworldly Dallol hydrothermal field glows with acid pools and mineral crusts in greens, yellows, and oranges, while the nearby Erta Ale volcano holds a rare permanent lava lake. Salt caravans of camels still cross the shimmering Lake Asale flats much as they have for centuries.
