In Ethiopia, East Africa
Harar Jugol in pictures.
Harar Jugol is a fortified old town in eastern Ethiopia, ringed by walls built between the 13th and 16th centuries and laced with a maze of narrow alleys and brightly painted courtyard houses. Long a major centre of Islamic learning and trade, it holds dozens of mosques and shrines within its compact core. By night, the famous hyena men feed wild hyenas at the city gates, a tradition found nowhere else.
