Avenue of the Baobabs

The Avenue of the Baobabs is a striking group of Adansonia grandidieri trees lining the dirt road between Morondava and Belon'i Tsiribihina. These 'upside-down' trees, some over 800 years old, stand nearly 30 meters tall and are the remnants of a dense tropical forest that once thrived here. At sunset, the trunks take on a warm, golden glow, creating a silhouette that is arguably the most photographed scene in Madagascar. These giants are deeply respected by the local population and serve as a poignant reminder of the island’s lost forests. Walking among these prehistoric sentinels is a humbling experience, offering a window into a time when Madagascar was a wild, untamed wilderness.
