Natural wonder
In Cape Verde, West Africa
Santo Antão in pictures.
The most northwesterly island, Santo Antão is a hiker's paradise of soaring volcanic ridges, terraced fields, and lush ravines like the famous Paúl Valley. Trails wind from cool, misty highlands down through villages and sugarcane plantations to the sea, offering some of the most dramatic scenery in West Africa. Its sheer green cliffs feel a world apart from the islands' arid east.
