Cidade Velha in pictures.
Founded in the late 15th century on Santiago Island, Cidade Velha was the original capital of Cape Verde and the first permanent European settlement in the tropics, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cobbled streets lead past the oldest colonial church in the world, a stone pillory, and the commanding Fortaleza Real de São Filipe overlooking the bay. It is the historic and spiritual heart of the islands.
