El Djem Amphitheatre in pictures.
Built around 238 AD in the ancient city of Thysdrus, the amphitheatre of El Djem could seat roughly 35,000 spectators and is among the largest in the Roman world. Its honey-colored stone walls still stand three tiers high, and visitors can explore the underground passages where gladiators and animals once waited. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
