Tanzania

Know before you go: timing, entry, health, and logistics for Tanzania.

When to go
The dry season from June to October is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals are easier to spot and the Great Migration river crossings occur in the Northern Serengeti. The calving season in January and February is also excellent for seeing newborn wildebeest in the Southern Serengeti. Zanzibar is best visited during the dry months of June–October and January–February.
Visa and entry
Most foreign nationals, including US and EU citizens, require a visa to enter Tanzania. US citizens must obtain a Multiple Entry Visa ($100 USD), while EU citizens typically require an Ordinary Single Entry Visa ($50 USD). It is highly recommended to apply for an e-visa via the official immigration website at least 10 days before travel. Travelers to Zanzibar must also have mandatory local travel insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).
Health
Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory for travelers arriving from countries with risk of transmission (including long layovers). Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Polio, and routine shots like MMR and DTP. Malaria is prevalent throughout most of the country; therefore, antimalarial medication and preventive measures against mosquito bites are strongly advised.
