- When to go
- The best time to visit is during the Dry Season from April to October, when weather is pleasant for hiking and wildlife viewing. September and October are peak months for seeing baby lemurs and active birdlife. For whale watching, visit between July and September. The rainy season (November to March) can be hot and humid, with a risk of cyclones in early months.
- Visa and entry
- All international travelers, including US and EU citizens, require a visa. A Visa on Arrival (VoA) is available for stays up to 60 days. Alternatively, an e-visa can be obtained through the official portal at least 72 hours before departure. Fees are approximately €10 for stays up to 15 days, €35 for 30 days, and €40-€48 for 60 days. Passports must be valid for six months beyond arrival with at least two blank pages.
- Health
- Routine vaccinations (MMR, DTP, Polio) should be up to date. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are highly recommended due to potential food and water risks. A Yellow Fever certificate is mandatory if arriving from or transiting through a high-risk country. Malaria is present nationwide (except Antananarivo), making antimalarial prophylaxis essential. Rabies vaccination is suggested for those visiting remote areas.
