Travel guide
Know before you go: timing, entry, health, and logistics for Burundi.
- When to go
- The best time to visit is during the long dry season from June to August, which is ideal for hiking and wildlife viewing. The short dry season in December and January is also a favorable time for travel.
- Visa and entry
- US and EU citizens can obtain a 30-day single-entry visa upon arrival at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport (Bujumbura) and major land borders for approximately $90 USD. A passport valid for at least six months and a Yellow Fever certificate are required. It is highly recommended to complete an online entry authorization form before departure to avoid delays.
- Health
- Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory for all travelers over 9 months of age. Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, and Cholera. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly advised for all regions, as the risk is high year-round.
- Currency
- Burundian Franc (BIF)
- Language

- Getting around
- Internal travel is arranged for you: private guided road transfers and light-aircraft hops between parks and regions, with airport meet-and-greet throughout.
